I will not comment on the content of the book, but rather on its physical production. This book is full of formatting errors and it is clear that it was not properly copy-edited. Typographical errors are always a distraction from the pleasure of reading and in this case they are quite distressing because the story itself is wonderful. This book is actually a printed version of its digitized version available from Project Gutenberg (PG). PG is a collection of classical books out of copyright that have been scanned and converted into text by volunteers. In as much as it is an admirable project, the quality of the PG digitized books can be variable. In the case of Knut Hamsun's "Growth of the Soil" there are many formatting errors and typos in the PG version that are exactly replicated in this print edition. It is disingenuous of Amazon not to provide this information to its buyers. The print edition that is sold here has no publisher information in the front of the book and the publisher name "Hamsun Press" as given by Amazon in the Product Description section is actually not mentioned anywhere in the book. The closest to a publisher information given inside the book is "Made in the USA, San Bernardino, CA, 27 August 2014" at the end of the book. This date happens to be my ordering date, so evidently we are dealing with a print-on-demand company that prefers to go unnamed (probably Amazon's own print-on-demand company CreateSpace, which has a printing press in San Bernardino, CA). Anyway, if you want to read Knut Hamsun's "Growth of the Soil", buy a different edition of it, there are several of them available at Amazon (including two other CreateSpace editions!). I purchased this due to a recommendation in Pat Conroys "My Reading Life" and would not likely have stumbled across it otherwise. Worth the read!
I loved this book. The beginning was wonderful, with characters so primitive and tied to their landscape that you couldn't tell what century was being described. Later, as the world came to meet these characters, the plot developed into a fascinating view on family planning in Scandinavia. I was reminded of Anne Tyler even, but the foreign setting here just added to my enjoyment.
An enjoyable tale of man's relationship with nature and work, infused with some drama among the small population of settlers in the Norwegian highlands. Some may find it boring and tedious, but the lessons to be learned from Isak and his work are certainly ones worth learning. The story also offers a unique contrast amongst rural versus modern life in the 1920s, and the perspective is overall thought provoking.
I would recommend this book only to those who enjoy Romantic era books, mainly due to the focus on the wilderness and man's duty.
This book for me is something different. Though tedious in places, it consistently put me in touch with my primitive self, in touch with the core of what it means to be a good person
This book excites me, the simplicity and yet the power. So few words spoken by Isak, but when they are delivered after a day, a week, a month in the field, you know the words have thought/contemplation as their foundation. In parts, dry and funny. In parts gruesome, confronting the The book covers a lifetime, with the meter/rythmn of the writing following the changes in the characters and development of the Isak and his community.
Some strong symbolism about capitalism and development that is a reality of most of our lives (and our recent pre-history for those in the west), this is not presented in a preaching manner, it is just part of the story.
This book should resonate with anyone who has ever thought about our forefathers who laid the foundations of the soft cities and towns we now live in and how we have surrounded ourselves with every comfort possible.
I was fascinated by the development of the characters, and especially by what was not said when they communicated. The simplicity of their lives gave way to complexity and change that brought them to misery and some sort of strangely excepted fate. It became a bit long and tedious somewhere near the middle and I lost interest.
This book moves very slowly, but to the author's credit, you want to keep reading it. I picked up this book because it was someone's "favorite" of all time. I am glad I read it, but would recommend it only to my friends that are intrigued by the beauty of a simple life. Certainly the title reflects the overall message of this book. It emphasizes the "contamination" of society when it strays far from its origins of the soil, and peace that comes from returning to the fruitfulness of the earth.
