Adrian Game Census Of A Species eBook Roger Gemelle

Adrian Baca walked through the desert with no wasted motion. Glancing up she saw the faint impression of the enormous burnt out mother ship, tracking ghost-like across the sky. The heat off the sand was intense but she wasn't going to waste suit battery. She saw movement out of the corner of her eye, and spotted a black box rolling from the south. Recon black box. She did not want it's sensors to scan her. Adrian carefully stepped backwards over broken glass and hid in the rubble of a half collapsed wall. She hit the Field-Gen to energize her suit layers and pressed her back to the wall as dust drifted down coating her breastplate.
She saw a child hiding in the shadow of the wall who looked about to speak and pressed her index finger to her lips thinking Quiet now, don't move.
She slipped the double triggered Plasma-Multi off her shoulder and took a bead on the black box. About 120 yards she guessed, and adjusted the focus of the beam, then set the gun on de-stable and gently squeezed the back trigger. The Plasma-Multi hummed as the charge built, and half-way to max she pulled the front trigger, squeezing off a pulse. The black box hissed and dissolved into dust.
She turned around and smiled at the little boy as he pulled something from his pocket. A small red ball which he dropped on the ground. Adrian's smile vanished and she had two seconds to react, and as it rolled towards her, picking up speed, she pulled her side-arm from her hip and with a smooth motion blew it apart. She frowned, looked up at the boy shaking her head and placed her laser dot on his forehead and fired. He fell in a heap.
"Dammit" She yelled aloud. The Weden were doing a good job of smoking the locals lately. But she couldn't afford to let her emotions cloud her thinking, and she couldn't be sure the little red marble-sphere had not scanned her, and if it had, she was fucked.
Better get out before this desert is swarming with Walkers. She thought. She pressed her suit comm.
"Baca reporting."
"Hey Adrian, what's your 20?"
"Half mile east of the small settlement you dropped me at. Had to waste a black box and a kid who was smoked."
"Sorry Baca, they must have got the kid from the settlement. A drag, but ya better make haste to extraction now, we have a trace on walkers moving north of you."
"Okay, Elham I'm outta here, be there asap. Baca out."
She pulled her shades down and headed west.
Adrian hit the extraction marker fifteen minutes later. She ran her hand over the top, felt a buzzing in her head and the desert faded to be replaced by the burst chamber walls of the cruiser. She turned off her suit field and stepped off the burst-plate, gave Elham a tired smile and waved as she headed down the narrow corridor to her berth. In her bunk she cried for a little while and then fell asleep.
